The Royal Angelfish (Pygoplites diacanthus) is a very colourful angelfish that is easily identified and belongs to the angelfishes family Pomacanthidae. This species has a very broad distribution and has been recorded from the Red Sea, east Africa, Indonesia, Philippines, Polynesia, southern Japan, Papua New Guinea, New Caledonia and Australia. In Australia this species is known to occur in the waters of north-western Western Australia around the north to the Capricorn Bunker Group in the southern section of the Great Barrier Reef.

Its body is yellow in colour with blue colouration on the rear of the dorsal fin and it has a small dark patch over its eye. This species is generally solitary and can be found on coral reefs from depths of 5 to 80 metres; however it is generally found in depths shallower than 20 metres. The Royal Angelfish (Pygoplites diacanthus) is known to feed on sponges and tunicates and grows to a maximum length of approximately 25cm.
